Macy’s Prom Fashion Show with Mandi Line, Action Item and My Prom Dress that I Designed

Last weekend I was lucky enough to cover the Macy’s Prom Fashion Show
at the Westfarms Mall here in Connecticut.

Macy’s even reserved front row catwalk seats for the bloggers,
but they really rolled out the red carpet for everyone!

Along with the fashion show they also provided lots of great treats and makeovers
for everyone who attended!

The event featured the latest prom looks hosted by Mandi Line, Head Costume Designer on ABC’s hit show Pretty Little Liars. After the fashion show everyone got to rock out to a live performance by Action Item, who also signed autographs.

Anyone who purchased their prom dress that day got 25% off and received a fabulous swag bag too. Oh, and anyone who tweeted a picture of their favorite prom dress with hashtag #MacysProm received a $10 Macy’s Gift Card as a thank you. Not bad Macy’s, not bad!

Let’s get on with the show!

Mandi did an awesome job hosting the event, and she put together some really great pieces for the fashion show! She divided the show into 4 different themes:

  • Glamour
  • Pretty Rocker
  • Free Spirit
  • After Party
Glamour
Beautiful, Striking, Show stopper!

There is a lot of back detail going on with these dresses, which I love. Why shouldn’t the back be as stunning as the front?

Spring Trends: soft pastels, navy and orange red!
Pretty Rocker
Show stopper with an edge

Tights showing through open toed shoes? Totally fine! I love how Mandi turned the white glamour dress into a Pretty Rocker dress with the crazy tights and open toed stilettos. Just remember, black and white always go together. That spike necklace paired with the black and grey dress is a no brainer once you see it on…would I have ever thought of it? Probably not, but it totally goes. Dress on the far right, the shape is simple but the print is loud. Makes for a great pair.

Spring Trend: Long hair parted on the side and pulled over one shoulder. LOVE it. It really makes an otherwise plain outfit look totally glam. I’ve done it a couple times and have gotten so many complement each time. Try it!

Free Spirit
Whimsical

Spring Trend: When it comes to accessories more is more…pile it on. More accessories the better. The mullet dress is totally in too. I got one last fall and can’t get enough of it. Color blocking is still in full swing too, so don’t stop doing that!
After Party

Seriously, if I were in high school I would for sure get a dress for the after party. Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure we ditched the after party…anyway….These outfits were totally inspired by the shoes. Mandi said If you can’t figure out what to wear start with your shoes which I’m pretty sure I do on a daily basis! I love shoes!!!
Then we got to listen to the band Action Item…meet them…and get their autographs

This is my best “I’m so excited I just met Action Item and got their autographs” face. Seriously though, they were really cool guys. Super funny actually! You can follow them on Twitter @ActionItemBand
They even gave me a couple autographs each so I can give one of them away to YOU! So great 🙂
I also got to meet Mandi Line herself. She might just be the coolest person…ever!

They had Homecoming on Pretty Little Liars and Aria’s dress, which Mandi

designed of course, is amazing!

Isn’t it amazing? Oh and I love Lucy Hale’s hair…totally makes me want to go dark again!
And per Be Everywhere’s request here is a picture of my Prom dress, designed by:

Design Your Own Dress, How to design your won dress, long black dress, prom fashion, macy's prom fashion
Dress: one of a kind, designed by moi
Purse: vintage, one of my grandma’s couture purses

Could it be any different then the ones from Macy’s Prom 2013? I designed a few dresses for high school dances and it was such a fun process. I loved wearing dresses that no one else would be wearing. I love trendy clothes, but for special events I like to wear something that’s a little more timeless.
My design:
  • Queen Anne neckline, without the collar
  • Long, triangular sleeves with slits all the way up
  • Drop waist {Makes you look really skinny}
  • Long, floor length, flowing gown. I didn’t want it to have a straight look
  • Side, invisible zipper.
  • Darts…darts, darts, darts. So important. Nothing beats a dress with good darts!

I wonder how long it will be before I design my next dress….?

Thanks friends 🙂 It was so fun designing my own dress, seriously, the only way to do it in my mind! Yes, a lot of the dresses at Macy’s could definitely be used for other events, not just prom. Which is so great! Why not wear an expensive dress more then once? 🙂

Great post! I need to go dress shopping for a vacation soon and I’m glad to see there are a ton of different options out there! I love your prom dress! My mom is a seamstress so I actually designed a bunch of my clothes when I was in middle school & high school, too! So much fun. 🙂
