It’s always a good idea to have a good Ham and Bean Soup Recipe for those times when you get ambitious and cook a ham, because you will inevitably have some left over. Well we do at least! The “leftover” soup is the best part anyway. This Ham and Bean Soup is low-fat too, which is perfect for me because when we cook a ham it’s usually for a family get together with lots of other cheesy, high-fat, high-sugar foods. This is a welcomed change!

Ham and Bean Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry navy beans
  • 1 to 1-1/2 pounds meaty ham bone
  • 4 cups chicken broth {or water}
  • 1-1/2 cups sliced celery {6 stalks}
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 tsp dried thyme, crushed
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp salt + more if desired
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Rinse bean. In a large saucepan combine beans and 4 cups water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat, cover and let stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse beans
  2. In a slow cooker combine meaty ham bone, celery, onion, garlic, thyme, cumin, salt and pepper and bay leaf. Stir in the beans and 4 cups fresh water or chicken broth
  3. Cover and cook on low-heat for 6-8 hours, depending on your slow cooker, or 4-6 hours on high heat
  4. Discard bay leaf. Remove meat; coarsely chop. Slightly mash beans then return meat.
  5. Cover; cook on high heat setting 5-10 minutes more until heated through

  • I always have good intentions to make something like this, and then the ham bone sits in my fridge until I give up and toss it. NEXT TIME! lol. Thanks for sharing on Weekend Bites
